Permitting is Underway

This morning I mailed off applications for permits from the county to get this project underway.  We need septic, water card, and building permits.  Septic must be full-size to meet code, even though our usage will be quite small.  The water card is necessary so that we can haul water from the district to fill our cistern.  Did you think we had a well?  No such luck.  Building permit applications include our engineer-stamped plans and signatures releasing the county from liability.

This afternoon I will place the order and send deposit for the yurt kit.

Here we go.

  1. Jenny,
Sounds exciting. Is a well really out of the question? Is it a matter of cost or just the water table is too deep or nonexistant? I think our well is down about 300 ft or so.
Are you concerned about getting water trucked in to your cistern should there be any civil unrest or other disruptions? How much will your cistern hold?

    • We would have to drill thousands of feet at a cost of over $20,000 just to attempt to hit water. So yeah, it’s out of the question.

Most residents of this area haul their water to their homes. The district provides water to haulers at $0.03/gallon for finished homes ($0.06 for unfinished). Our cistern will hold 1000 gallons. There is no guarantee from the district that water will be available long term. These are absolutely concerns that bother me a bit. On the up side, these things keep the area from becoming too overly populated, and on the down side it will very likely affect our property value and is somewhat inconvenient.

This is one of the reasons we are keeping the house small and doing much of the work ourselves. This project is not without risk.

      • Hi Jenny….exciting times for sure! There’s always an up and down side to most issues I think…the trick is to decide if you can handle the risk of the down side should it occur. I guess that old saying, nothing ventured, nothing gained would apply. Enjoy the process and my white light for a successful process. Love, diane
